Colleagues:
Let me begin by offering sincere thanks to everyone in the FAU community for the very effective team effort that has kept our University on track and focused on delivering a full range of services to students despite the difficulties imposed by the ongoing budget crisis. Your dedication to the University’s core mission has never wavered, even in the face of several years of very low or no salary increases. While raises to state employees, including university employees, were not funded through the state’s legislative budgeting process, I am pleased to announce that FAU will be able to award salary increases to all eligible employees of the University. Based in large part on the cost-cutting measures we have all endured over the past years, combined with a 2010 legislative budget that recognized the value of higher education and FAU, we are able to fund this well-deserved wage enhancement program internally.
Eligible employees who are not part of a union bargaining unit may receive up to a 3 percent base salary increase, consisting of 1 percent across-the-board and 2 percent for merit. This increase will be effective August 11, 2010. Generally, eligible employees include out-of-unit faculty, AMP and SP employees. Employees with an individual employment agreement, adjunct faculty and Temporary (OPS) employees are not eligible. Employees in auxiliary divisions or paid from contracts and grants will be advised by their administrators regarding eligibility. Specific details on eligibility and merit requirements will be provided shortly by our Human Resources Department, Provost’s office and other administrators.
Union-represented employees (members of the United Faculty of Florida [“UFF”] and the Police Benevolent Association bargaining units) will have the opportunity to negotiate similar salary increases through good faith bargaining.
For in-unit faculty, the University presented its latest salary enhancement package to the UFF bargaining team on July 8, 2010. The University offered a 3 percent base salary increase with across-the-board, merit and equity components, in addition to increases of 9 percent or 12 percent for faculty promoted to associate or full professor, respectively. I remain hopeful that we will reach agreement with the UFF on all outstanding issues and settle contract negotiations in the very near future. This will allow us to award faculty these well-deserved raises by the start of this fall semester.
The funding for these raises will be taken from our existing 2010-11 budget. This allocation reflects our Board of Trustees’ firm belief, which I fully share, that people are a university’s most important asset and that rewarding loyalty and dedication must rank among our highest priorities. To everyone who is working hard to keep FAU on course during these challenging times, I once again say thank you. You are making an enormous contribution to the future of our University.
More specific information about how this salary increase will affect you individually will follow shortly.
Sincerely,
Mary Jane Saunders
President
